My name is Mason Porter. I am a Professor in the Department of Mathematics at UCLA. Previously I was Professor of Nonlinear and Complex Systems in the Mathematical Institute at University of Oxford. I was also a Tutorial Fellow of Somerville College.
I think a pitcher from back in our day (class of '95, IIRC) also set a hit batsmen record. IIRC his was a career mark rather than a single-game record like this one.
From my memory, John "Mary" Allen (c/o '97 or '98) broke the record during the '95-'96 season with (I think) 7. Tim Buschman shattered the record vs. Cal Lu in '98 or '99 with 11; the overall game total was also a record, that being 12 as the Cal Lu pitcher hit *me* (the catcher) in my final at-bat in the top of the 7th -- and I had a single, double, HR at the time. That was the first of a double-header. In my first at-bat in the 2nd game, I hit a triple. Bastards. I would have had a cycle vs. them. (I went on to have single, triple, hr in that 2nd game, one of my best DHs ever!)
This Tech article doesn't agree with those numbers, though; maybe those are DivIII records I'm talking about?
Hmmm... I don't think that Jon liked the nickname "Marty" to begin with---let alone "Mary". :) (People in Blacker started calling him Marty during his frosh year because he apparently looked just like a then-recent alum named Marty.)
In terms of whether memories and records match, there's also the possibility that The Tech's facts aren't correct. Not that The Tech would ever mess anything up... (And I write this as a former editor...)
Come on, the Tech is the foremost in journalistic integrity, right behind CNN and Fox News.
I wonder if those "records" are from Coach D's memory. The "records" that we supposedly broke probably were too.
Yes, Jon Paul "Marty" Allen (the man with four first names) didn't like Marty at first, but at some point resigned himself to the fact that most people thought it was actually his name.
Ok, according to the 2006 NCAA Record book, the most HBP by a pitcher in a game is 7, achieved four times. Buschman's record is clearly not observed. The most in an inning is 4, which occurred nine times; Buschman also accomplished at LEAST this during that game. I remember because he hit the bases loaded, then hit another batter to drive in a run. I'm not sure if he hit any more in that inning.

Heh... Fox News is quite the lower bound there...
ReplyDeleteYeah, and CNN is the Word of God...
ReplyDeleteI don't pay much attention to them either. :)
