I find fortunes generally poor these days. They used to have something mildly profound, if meaningless, somewhat Confucius-esque. Now they just appear to be a random collection of words that have just been passed through MS Word to make sure they aren't underlined with the green squiggle. My latest one was "Take care of your body with steadfast fidelity".
I often wonder if it is reflection on the general state of the world these days.
If you add "in bed" to your fortune, then it's generally more amusing.
I don't think they were ever meant to be profound and haven't noticed any substantive changes over the last 20 or so years. I did, however, appreciate with a messed-up random number generator that suggested a set of 6 lottery numbers that include a repeat.
I like the 'in bed' idea, though I think that makes my last one more dirty than funny, or maybe that is just how my mind works.
Maybe you are right about them not changing. It could be that I was just more easily impressed in my youth and looking for something profound out of them. The cynicism of age impacts everywhere.
Adding 'in bed' is supposed to do both.
