Dodgers acquire infielder Ronnie Belliard

The Dodgers acquired infielder Ronnie Belliard in a trade with the Nationals. Um, why? What we really need are pitchers. I just don't see the point of this trade.

Thome's a pitcher, right? Well, at least Garland is...

Wow, there appears to have been some activity while I was asleep!

Garland is a pitcher and is a solid pickup. He's not an ace, but at this stage I certainly didn't expect to get an ace. He'll help a lot!

I guess Thome is going to be a pinch hitter for us? He can't really play in the field anymore. He'll be useful in that role and has had an awesome career, but the Garland deal is much more important.

I wondered about Thome too. My best guess is that the Bums will use him as PH for the rest of the season, and optimistically will have him as DH for the 4 AL home games in the WS.

I agree that that is presumably the plan.

Given this trade, it is worth remarking that Loney's offense seems to not be gradually improving from season to season as was hoped (as in fact worse this season than before), so I wonder if he'll be our first baseman next season? Thome can't play regularly in the field (or apparently at all, based on what he said), so I think it might be interesting to see who is manning first base for us next season.
