2025 MLB Managers of the Year

Baseball's 2025 Managers of the Year were announced today, and both winners are repeat winners from last year.

Stephen Vogt of the Cleveland Guardians won the American League Manager of the year award for the 2nd year in a row, and Pat Murphy of the Milwaukee Brewers accomplished the same feat in the National League.

2024 Baseball Managers of the Year

The 2024 Managers of the Year in Major League Baseball are Stephen Vogt of the Cleveland Guardians and Pat Murphy of the Milwaukee Brewers.

Jim Leyland Elected to Baseball's Hall of Fame

Former manager Jim Leyland has been elected to Major League Baseball's Hall of Fame in a vote of the Contemporary Baseball Era Non-Players Committee.

"Leyland received 15 of a possible 16 votes (93.8%), while Piniella received 11 (68.8%), White received 10 (62.5%) and Gaston, Johnson, Montague, Peters and West each received fewer than five votes." A candidate needed to receive 12 or more votes (i.e., from at least 75% of the committee) to be elected.

Jay Jaffe wrote a particularly compelling case in favor of Bill White.

2023 Managers of the Year

The Managers of the Year have been announced. Skip Schumaker of the Miami Marlins won in the National League and Brandon Hyde of the Baltimore Orioles won in the American League.

2022 Managers of the Year

Baseball's 2022 Managers of the Year were announced today. Buck Showalter of the New York Mets is the National League Manager of the Year, and Terry Francona of the Cleveland Guardians is the American League Manager of the Year. This is Showalter's 4th MOY award (with four different teams and in four different decades), and this is Francona's third. Both of them will ultimately end up in the Hall of Fame.

2021 Baseball Managers of the Year

Major League Baseball has announced its 2021 Managers of the Year. The Americal League Manager of the Year is Kevin Cash of the Tampa Bay Rays, and the National League Manager of the year is Gabe Kapler of the San Fransisco Giants.

As with the Rookies of the Year, neither winner is surprising.

RIP Tommy Lasorda (1927–2021)

Dodger great and Hall of Fame manager Tommy Lasorda has died. He died late last night. Tommy was a lifelong Dodger, "bleeding Dodger blue", with 71 years in the organization. I'm glad that he lived to see us ("us" = The Dodgers) finally win another World Series. He was also great in The Baseball Bunch, which I watched as a kid.

2020 Managers of the Year

Baseball's 2020 Managers of the Year have been announced, and both winners are the expected ones: Kevin Cash of the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League and Don Mattingly of the Miami Marlins in the National League. Cash received 22 of the 30 first-place votes, and Mattingly received 20 of the 30 first-place votes. (I expected Mattingly to win unanimously.)

2019 Managers of the Year

The 2019 Managers of the Year in Major League Baseball are Mike Shildt (of the St. Louis Cardinals) in the National League and Rocco Baldelli (of the Minnesota Twins) in the American League.

Dodgers Win Franchise-Record 106 Games!

Today was the last day of Major League Baseball's 2019 regular season, and the Dodgers won their franchise-record 106th game!

Clayton Kershaw pitched a scoreless inning in relief, although his earned run average remained above 3.00 (he would have needed to pitch 3 scoreless innings to get below 3.00), after a Major-League-record 10 consecutive seasons with an ERA less than 3.00. (The number 10 depends on a certain minimum number of innings pitched, so one can quibble with exactly how one should count things.) The second-largest consecutive streak, by Greg Maddux and at least one other, encompasses seven straight seasons.

It was a very nice touch when Madison Bumgarner, in possibly his last game as a Giant, had a pinch-hitting appearance against Clayton Kershaw in the 5th inning.

Also, today was the last game in Bruce Bochy's managerial career. He had announced long ago — before the beginning of the season, I think — that 2019 would be his final season. He'll be entering the Hall of Fame as a manager.

20th Anniversary of Bobby Valentine's Dugout Disguise

Twenty years ago today, Bobby Valentine pulled his famous stunt. I remember watching this game on television.

It was awesome when Ichiro Suzuki paid homage to this incident last year.

2018 Major League Baseball Managers of the Year

The 2018 American League Manager of the Year is Bob Melvin of the Oakland Athletics. The 2018 National League Manager of the Year is Brian Snitker of the Atlanta Braves.

Torey Lovullo and Paul Molitor Win Manager of the Year Awards

Torey Lovullo of the Arizona Diamondbacks and Paul Molitor of the Minnesota Twins have been named the 2017 Managers of the Year in the National League and American League, respectively. The Diamondbacks and Twins saw the two largest win increases from 2016; this is often a good recipe for who will be named Manager of the Year. In the National League, Dave Roberts of the Dodgers finished second.

Major League Baseball has announced its 2016 Managers of the Year. Dave Roberts of the Los Angeles Dodgers won in the National League (yay!), and Terry Francona of the Cleveland Indians won in the American League.

2016 Managers of the Years

Major League Baseball's Manager of the Year awards were announced last night. Joe Madden of the Chicago Cubs won the award in the National League, and Jeff Banister of the Texas Rangers won the award in the American League.

A Baseball Tirade for the Ages

Reds manager Bryan Price just had a tirade for the ages. (You can also listen to Price's rant on YouTube.)

Also, it makes me nostalgic for Tommy Lasorda's heyday as manager of the Dodgers, though the style seemed much closer to Lee Elia's famous tirade.

2014 Major League Baseball Managers of the Year

Matt Williams of the Washington Nationals was named the National League Manager of the Year, and Buck Showalter of the Baltimore Orioles was named the American League Manager of the Year.
