"FIPO"

This is your occasional reminder about the mantra known as "FIPO" ( = "Fuck it. PLOS One.")

It is best used in verb form.

Example usage: "My paper got rejected from more than half a dozen journals and I wanted it out of my life, so I decided to FIPO it."

It turns out that there is a journal called "Nonlinear Differential Equations and Applications". The acronym it uses is "NoDEA".

And today's scientific acronym award goes to... this paper, which introduces the acronym STROOPWAFEL (which stands for "Simulating The Rare Outcomes Of Populations With AIS For Efficient Learning").

Acronym Fail

"SDI" was really not the best choice of acronyms for the new fielding metric that will be used to help determine which Major League Baseball players win gold gloves. Just saying...

Acronyms and "Sophistication"

Fun Fact: If you give something an acronym, it will sound more sophisticated even when it really isn't.

Some examples: DNS for "directed numerical simulations", ROI for "region of interest", and AUC for "area under the curve".

Scientists are very good at this, by the way. :)

A Chaste Mathematics Event

Apparently, the Mathematical Institute is going to have a CHASTE event. No, really. The acronym form the event is CHASTE. I thought that all mathematics events were chaste events, so what's the big deal?

(Admittedly, I am curious about the topic. The choice of acronym seems a bit suboptimal.)
